It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood…

You know how sometimes you just get this idea nagging in the back of your head and you can’t make it stop until you just go and do it? Well, I’ve had that problem ever since I scanned through some of the old Spider-Friends cards recently and came across an old friend of mine.

Does whatever a spider can...

Yeah, it’s Spider-Man. But it’s not just any Spider-Man. It’s the “Friendly Neighborhood” edition and boy does he get friendly with his neighbors. Ol’ Spidey comes with a built in Overwhelming Force as long as he’s attacking. How nice is that? Whenever Spidey’s attacking, no stuns for anyone on your side. Go ahead and swing everyone up into Galactus, he can’t touch you.

Now, normally, I’d think about mixing him with, say, Teen Titans. The ability to attack over and over again with Titans Go and not needing to worry about drawing your Overwhelming Force or Follow The Leader cards is very tempting. Or what about the Outsiders? I’m sure they’d love to be able to avoid any and all stunbacks. However, I’m a mono-man at heart. I prefer to do things as “in-team” as possible. So, I’ve decided to venture into a rarely entered zone.

Spider-Friends team attack.

So, I went ahead and looked through all the Spidey cards out there. Using Friendly Neighborhood means I’m going GA so I have access to everything. Right off the bat there is M.J. with her ability to not only draw you a free card whenever a team attack stuns an opponent but also comes with built-in reinforcement for all your protected characters. Then there’s Speedball. He’s like a miniature 3-Drop Spidey, handing out non-stuns whenever he himself gets stunned. Evasion helps that bit out a lot ;).

Then I came across Zabu. This deck is going to be underdropping a lot and that means Zabu’s “exhaust if no other Spider-Friends” coming into play effect is unlikely to activate. So, why not add him? How about all those Savage Land Spidey pals?

Next, you can’t go wrong with 2-drop Black Cat.

Oh, you wanna Mobilize? Not ’till turn 5, buddy!When I get hurt, I draw you cards… sort of an abusive relationship, really.

Which one? Both of ’em, of course. One gives you card draw, the other gives your opponent a headache by delaying his plot twists by two turns. Solo is a big attack on turn 4 so he goes in as well. I’ve got quite a few Evasion characters so I added Jessica Drew and Dusk which give +1 attack and +1 defense, respectively. Dusk also has a nice boost effect if you miss a very special 3-drop.

The 3-drop is Prodigy. Giving all the characters in the deck +3 while defending against higher cost characters is very nice. Sort of a built-in Nasty Surprise. Other 3-drops are, of course, 3-Drop Spidey as well as Ka-Zar and a single copy of Ricochet just to mess with people’s heads.

The gives us 34 characters and a list that looks something like the following:

Characters:

3x Zabu – Constant Companion
3x Aunt May – Golden Oldie
3x Speedball – Robert Baldwin
3x Mary Jane Watson-MJ

3x Black Cat – Nine Lives
1x Black Cat-Master Thief
2x Solo-James Bourne
2x Shanna the She-Devil – Shanna O’Hara Plunder
2x Jessica Drew . Spider-Woman-Venom Blast
2x Dusk-Cassie St. Commons

4x Spider-Man-Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
3x Ka-Zar – Lord Kevin Plunder
2x Prodigy-Richie Gilmore
1x Ricochet-Johnny Gallo

Now, for support, we have the excellent card drawing ability of Empire State University. We have New Mutations to give our characters some MUCH needed flight/range. Spider-Senses gives you a free +3 defense boost for absolutely nothing which is very nice. Nasty Surprise helps you get your stunbacks, Savage Beatdown gives you that bit of “umph” to hit through to the opponent, Mobilize for search, and Overwhelming Force is there just in case you miss Spidey. Then I found Fun and Games. Give all my characters Bat Got Your Tongue? for activated effects? Sign me up! After that, our deck list looks something like this:

Friendly Neighborhood Web-Slingers
Spider-Friends
Golden Age

Characters:

3x Zabu – Constant Companion
3x Aunt May – Golden Oldie
3x Speedball – Robert Baldwin
3x Mary Jane Watson-MJ

3x Black Cat – Nine Lives
1x Black Cat-Master Thief
2x Solo-James Bourne
2x Shanna the She-Devil – Shanna O’Hara Plunder
2x Jessica Drew . Spider-Woman-Venom Blast
2x Dusk-Cassie St. Commons

4x Spider-Man-Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
3x Ka-Zar – Lord Kevin Plunder
2x Prodigy-Richie Gilmore
1x Ricochet-Johnny Gallo

Plot Twists:
4x New Mutations
4x Nasty Surprise
4x Spider Senses
4x Mobilize
2x Fun and Games
2x Savage Beatdown
2x Overwhelming Force

Locations:
4x Empire State University

So, the basic mulligan condition of this deck is Spider-Man, Aunt May to get Spidey, ESU, or pretty much anything that looks decent :P. Odd initiative is probably best but it doesn’t really matter. Just go in for the team attacks on your init. and use Fun and Games to harass your opponent off init. Lots of card draw so you should always have what you need. Yeah… simple build. Hopefully I can play it on MWS here soon.

And now that annoying little voice in the back of my head that said “Go build Team Attack Spider-Friends” can shut up. If anyone is confused, no this isn’t part of the Vs. Resolution. That’s the feature of the site, not all there is. I’ll still chatter about silly things like this deck. I’ll return to my regularly scheduled Vs. Resolution some time later this week. I’d like to try and play the deck I’ll be writing about more than once before blogging about it ;).

I’ve always been a fan of Going My Way – sure, it’s only a single turn New Mutations, but those +1 ATK for Spider-Man’s can go a long way.

    Nice write-up!
